The postponed Summer Olympics in Tokyo have been confirmed to happen on July 23， 2021， the International Olympic Committee （IOC） announced on Monday。
国际奥委会在公告中表示，国际奥委会（IOC）、国际残奥委会（IPC）、2020年东京奥组委、东京市政府和日本政府商定了原定于2020年召开的第三十二届奥林匹克运动会推迟到2021年的具体日期。
2020年东京奥运会将于2021年7月23日至8月8日举行，2021年8月24日至9月5日举行残奥会。
“The International Olympic Committee （IOC）， the International Paralympic Committee （IPC）， the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee， the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the government of Japan today agreed new dates for the games of the XXXII Olympiad， in 2021。
The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be celebrated from 23 July to 8 August 2021。 They also agreed on new dates for the Paralympic Games， which will be celebrated from 24 August until 5 September 2021，“ said the IOC in an official statement。

The Olympic event had been originally scheduled to take place on July 24 this year， but the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the plan and forced both Tokyo and the IOC to reconsider。
Both at first insisted on holding the Olympics on the initial date but the continuously deteriorating situation put a growing number of Olympic Committees in opposition to the IOC and Tokyo。
The IOC and Tokyo compromised by delaying the event to 2021， no later than summer of the year。

Some large-scale sporting events have been rescheduled following the postponement。
The 2021 World Athletics Championships， which was set to be held next year from August 6-15 in Oregon， U.S。， will now be held in 2022。
In a press release， track and field‘s world governing body said it supports the decision made by the International Olympic Committee （IOC） and they are in discussion with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the European Championships for holding their event in 2022， but new dates have yet to be confirmed。
International Swimming Federation （FINA） also welcomed the new dates for Tokyo Olympics， saying it would now examine ways to revise dates for its 2021 World Championships， initially scheduled for July 16-August 1。
FINA said it will consult with the organizers of the 2021 World Championships in the Japanese city of Fukuoka “to examine a revision to the proposed dates。”
Olympics delay a blow for virus-hit Tokyo hotels
Many hotel operators in Japan have seen bookings decimated by the virus。

The shock postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has also dealt a savage blow to Japan‘s hotels and tourism industry， already reeling from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic。
Many operators have seen bookings decimated by the virus and had been clinging to the hope that the Games would help them claw back this year‘s losses。

Like the rest of the world， Japan‘s hotel industry has been devastated by the spread of the coronavirus with bookings down by as much as 90 percent year-on-year in the March-April period， according to a survey by the Japan Tourism Agency。
Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo‘s busy Shinjuku district – home to the victorious Springboks during the Rugby World Cup – said it began receiving cancellation calls shortly after the delay was announced。

The Imperial Hotel in central Tokyo had been block-booked by Tokyo 2020 organizers for the original dates of the Games， which were due to open on July 24， and said it was now waiting for guidance。
Even before the postponement it had been struggling with the “grave impact” of a downturn in tourism because of the pandemic， and had slashed its net profit forecast for the fiscal year ending this month by 37 percent。

But for all the hardship， there is one silver lining – the prospect of at least recovering some losses when the rescheduled Games go ahead。
